As a middle school mom in Colorado Springs, I always knew my son was incredibly bright—but traditional schooling just never seemed to tap into that potential. He’s the kind of kid who can understand complex ideas quickly—but ask him to sit still for long lectures or fill out endless worksheets, and he’s checked out in minutes.
So when it came time to choose a middle school, I felt a mix of worry and hope. I wanted a place that wouldn’t just challenge his mind but would also give him the structure, purpose, and handson opportunities he thrives on.
That’s exactly what we found in Power Technical (PTEC), an as an added bonus, there’s NO TUITION, as it is a charter school! I am so grateful we made the decision to send him there.
He Needed More Than Academics—He Needed Structure
Even though my son is smart, he absolutely needs clear expectations and routines to stay on track. PTEC’s emphasis on character, responsibility, and work ethic has been transformational.
Showing up on time.
Finishing what he starts.
Keeping his workspace organized.
Learning to communicate respectfully.
These are skills he’s always needed, but at PTEC, they’re part of everyday learning. The structure isn’t harsh—it’s supportive. And for the first time, my son not only understands what’s expected of him, but he rises to it.
A Smart Kid Who Learns By Doing? PTEC Gets That.
My son has always learned best with his hands. He loves building, taking things apart, experimenting, and creating—he just wasn’t being fed by the traditional classroom model.
At PTEC, everything changed.
He gets to explore real trades in middle school, including:
Robotics
Woodworking
Welding
Construction
Drafting and Design
Engineering concepts
Automotive basics
Plumbing
Masonry
These aren’t watereddown “activities.” They’re real, purposeful classes where students use real equipment, solve real problems, and see the results of their work. For a handson learner who’s also academically gifted, this balance has been perfect.
Finally—A Place Where His Intelligence Shines Instead Of Being Lost
Before PTEC, teachers would say, “He’s so smart, but…”
Now the sentence is, “He’s so smart, and look what he can do.”
The moment academics were connected to real-life, handson projects, everything clicked for him. Their “PTEC Connect” approach helps students understand why their learning matters.
Math becomes something he uses for real measurements.
Science explains how materials behave.
Writing becomes communication with purpose.
He doesn’t just memorize—he applies, builds, and solves. And that’s where his intelligence truly glows.
The Real-World Environment Helped Him Mature
Walking into PTEC’s beautiful, enormous facility impressed me—but it absolutely inspired my son. The high ceilings, industrial workspaces, and professional feel send a clear message:
You are capable of real work.
It’s amazing what happens when a kid sees himself as someone with purpose. He pays attention differently. He takes pride in his work. He’s more serious—without losing the spark that makes him who he is.
At first, I was concerned that it is a middle school and a high school in the same building. Then, I found out that middle schoolers and high schoolers have their own classes, locker areas, and lunch hours. My son also has been assigned a high school “buddy” who has been a great role model for him.
The Growth Has Been Beyond What I Expected
Within the first semester, the changes were undeniable:
Better follow through
More confidence
Improved organization
Stronger motivation
A sense of direction
He talks about the trades he wants to explore and the projects he hopes to master. As a mom, hearing your child talk about the future with excitement at this age is incredibly rewarding.
PTEC Is Helping Him Become Who He’s Meant To Be
Whether he ultimately chooses to enter a trade, pursue an apprenticeship, or go to college, PTEC is giving him a strong foundation built on both skills and character.
It’s challenging, structured, handson, and purposeful—the perfect match for a smart kid who needs more than a traditional classroom can offer.
If Your Child Is Bright But Needs Something Different… Consider PTEC
Not every gifted student thrives in a standard academic environment. Some need movement, purpose, projects, tools, and clear expectations.
My son needed all of that—and he got it at PTEC.
