The James Irwin Charter Schools comprise a three school K-12 system serving approximately 1200 students. Committed to a small school philosophy and managed growth, we will be expanding this school year. Situated in Colorado Springs, Colorado at the foot of Pikes Peak, the mountains are only minutes away from any point in our delightful small city.

Teachers do not need to be certified, but must have a BA and must have passed the Place or Praxis to be Highly Qualified as defined by NCLB

Administration

The Administration is not currently seeking to fill any positions.

Elementary

James Irwin Charter Elementary excels in meeting the needs of all their students. Using Direct Instruction methodologies of effective teaching practices and the Core Knowledge scope and sequence, JICES brings a positive can-do mentality to the elementary classroom. Each classroom has both a teacher and an instructional aide. Reading and Math are grouped by student achievement level and meet two times a day. Teacher training is intense and ongoing with weekly training and evaluation, and side by side coaching in the classroom. Only those who are willing to learn the craft of effective, positive teaching, who have a desire to excel and who are ready to teach to mastery should apply. Teacher certification is not required, but applicants must meet the NCLB highly qualified standard (pass Colorado Department of Education Praxis or Place test).

The Elementary School is not currently seeking to fill any positions.

Middle School

Using Direct Instruction methodologies of effective teaching practices and the Core Knowledge scope and sequence, JICMS brings rigorous academics and character development to the middle school experience. Teacher training is intense and ongoing with observations and side by side coaching in the classroom. Only those who are willing to learn the craft of effective, positive teaching, who have a desire to excel and who are ready to teach to mastery should apply. Teacher certification is not required, but applicants must meet the NCLB highly qualified standard (pass Colorado Department of Education Praxis or Place test).

The Middle School is currently not seeking to fill any positions.

High School

JICHS uses Direct Instruction methodologies of effective teaching practices, positive student behavior strategies, and a rigorous, college-prep curriculum to create a learning environment which has proven results in successfully preparing our students for college, career and life. We take our mission to develop character and academic potential seriously. Therefore, teacher training is intense and ongoing with regular observations, video recording, and side-by-side coaching in the classroom. Only those who are willing to learn the craft of effective, positive teaching, who have a desire to excel and who are ready to teach to mastery should apply. Teacher certification is not required, but applicants must meet the NCLB highly qualified standards:

  • Bachelor degree or higher from an accredited college with a major in the content area being taught; OR,
  • Bachelor degree or higher from an accredited college with a major in any area, plus…
    • 24 credit hours in the content area being taught; or,
    • Passing score on the PRAXIS or PLACE in the content area being taught.
