There are two basic types of testing: college entrance exams and their practice tests, and credit by exam tests.
The most well-known and commonly used college entrance exams are the ACT and the SAT. These tests are typically taken in the spring and/or summer of a student’s junior year or the fall of their senior year. Both of these tests also have practice tests: the EXPLORE for freshmen and the PLAN for sophomores are practice ACT tests, and the PSAT/NMSQT, typically taken in the fall of the junior year, is the practice SAT.

The most common credit by exam for high school students are the AP exams and CLEP tests. Both are offered through the College Board.
For AP (Advanced Placement) exams, students take a year-long AP course in high school at the end of which they take an AP exam. Colleges and universities will give credit for college courses based on their determined acceptable scores. Each school determines their own acceptable scores, so you may be able to earn credit for a course with an AP test score of 3 at one college, but you may not get that credit if you transfer to a college that requires a 4 for credit on the same exam. Be sure to check with your school to determine the acceptable scores for credit granted for AP exams.
James Irwin Charter High School offers AP courses in the following subjects:
American History
Calculus AB
Calculus BC
Computer Science (1 & 2)
English Language and Composition (English 11)
English Literature and Language (English 12)
Environmental Science
Macroeconomics
Studio Art
CLEP (College Level Examination Program) tests are exams that test an individual’s college level knowledge gained through coursework, independent study, cultural pursuits, travel, and special interests. Unlike the AP exam, no high school course is offered as a “CLEP” course. As with AP credit though, each school determines the acceptable score and the amount of credit granted for each CLEP exam, so be sure to check with your school for details on possible credit.
