The Jag varsity boys came out from the tip to set the tempo of the way the game would be played. Intense defense led the Jags to a total of 6 blocks and 4 steals in the 1st half. After half time discussion Jags came out focused on their offensive presence. Leading the charge, Chris Bowen scored 19 points and Daniel Cameron scored 18 points as well as shutting down the offensive threat of Denver School of Science & Technology. The Jags battled for a 54-42 victory over DSST.
Go Jags! Great Team Victory!!!!
The Jags had an intense but fun filled weekend of basketball. On Friday, the Jags defeated the Kiowa Indians with an ending score of 53-35. This win placed the Jags in the championship bracket to face the Elbert Bulldogs. Although the Jags got off to a slow start and only scored 7 points in the first half, they came back in the second half with intensity on the defensive end. Elbert struggled with the Jags’ press defense which allowed the Jags to get back into the game from an eleven point deficit. At one point in the fourth quarter, the Jags took the lead from Elbert and went up three points. Our Jag Men were fired up. There was chest bumping, high fives, and the crowd blew the roof off. Leading the charge on the offensive end, Daniel Cameron and Erick Mock both scored 7 points in the fourth quarter. Although the Elbert Bulldogs went on to win the game 38-32, the Jag Men put up a picture perfect defensive performance. ”Relentless” is a better description for their performance. Steven Rohde managed to pull off four huge blocks and seven big rebounds. Justin Massey had seven rebounds and one steal.
Jag Fans stay tuned because the Jag men have emerged as a conference threat!!!!
Jags vs. Vista Ridge
So far, this has been the best performance for the Jags. Our guys made school history by scoring the highest amount of points in a single game. The team continues to raise the bar for themselves. We were faced with a tough 4 A team that were successful with the press and the ability to hustle. With that said Jags settled down in the fourth quarter and worked as a team to bring us another victory. The Jags were led by team captain, Chris Bowen who scored 27 points, 3 assists, and 5 steals. Our freshman, Daniel Cameron scored 19 points, 3 assists, and 5 steals. Steven Rohde proved to be a post threat by scoring 19 points and having 9 big blocks. Rohde’s post presence set the tempo of the game. The ending score was 82-72.
Jags vs. Fountain Valley
The Jags got off to a sluggish start after Friday night’s Big Emotional Victory. Nevertheless, our team stuck together and managed to pull a good defensive performance to bring home another win. Our two captains settled the team by having the ability to run the floor and recognize where we were struggling. The team dug deep and finished with a 44-36 victory.
GO JAGS!!!!!
James Irwin reaches another milestone with a victory over Lamar. It was a night filled with intense emotions from both teams. James Irwin came in with a game plan but Lamar’s up-tempo play would not allow them to settle in to execute their game plan. During the first quarter, Lamar went on a 9-1 run which allowed them to gain a 15 point lead over the Jags. The Jags did not allow this to get them down. With determination and heart, they were able to cut the lead down to 11 by half time.
After half time adjustments, the Jag Men came out with a 6-0 run led by Jacob Brenner. The Jags defensive commitment changed the wave of the game led by Daniel Cameron with 7 steals and 12 points. Once the defense was established, our offense came alive. With Justin Massey leading the Jags in the fourth quarter with 11 points, the Jags were able to defeat Lamar with the ending score being 62-55.
GO JAGS!!
The Varsity Men came out with good energy and desire to win the game. Trinidad brought intense hustle to the game and although the Jags were able to keep up with the tempo, they were not able to finish at the basket. They attempted 71 shots but were only able to have 17 successful shots. Trinidad capitalized on our off shooting night. After several adjustments were made, we still were not able to finish at the basket, and Trinidad went on to win the game 51-46.
The Jags knew that they would have to pick up the intensity against La Junta. The team wanted to put the previous night’s loss behind them and focus on the Tigers. The Jags got off to a slow start against a very aggressive team. Although the Jags had good looks, they were not able to finish at the basket. In the fourth quarter after being down by 20, the Jags went on a 22-9 point run. Unfortunately, we ran out of gas and the Tigers went on to win 68-56.
So we begin the next chapter of the Jag’s Basketball Diary……Austin Cook enters the scene with aggressive play, blocked shots, huge rebounds, and the ability to make baskets. Erick Mock took the floor as a leader and was able to make a tremendous offensive presence. Ellicott continued to pressure Erick, but he was able to handle the pressure and showed the fans why he has the title “Floor General”. Senior, Chris Bowen, came through for the Jags in the 3rd Quarter by weaving his way through traffic and dropping the BIG 3’s. Our Jag Men continued to remain humble throughout the game and focused on obtaining the big win. Stay tuned for the next chapter!!
GO JAGS!!!!
What does one say after the performance the Varsity Jag Men displayed? Really what does one say? I can throw out random words like spectacular, incredible, relentless, determined, prideful, hungry, and believers. Should I continue? All of the above describe the way the Jags played tonight. There were a lot of emotions coming into the game tonight. One thing the Jags had to overcome was the absence of our number one scorer and vocal leader, Chris Bowen, who was not able to play because of an injury. The Jags also had to gather themselves from the embarrassing loss to Rye 50-73 from the previous night. Because of the lack of defensive effort against Rye, the guys were on a mission to prove to themselves that they play better basketball then what they displayed. They wanted to conquer and destroy any team placed in front of them. The Jag Men rallied around one another and refused to be denied. I tell you, we are a different team when we execute the game plan and have players step up and contribute big minutes to the cause. Big minutes came from Senior Forward, Garret Young. Garret stepped up and drained some game changing three pointers. Garret with a valid point to prove, delivered big. He brought valuable minutes to the table tonight. If I had to say one thing that stands out the most for the Jag Men, I would have to say the relentless defense. The guys were hungry on defense. After the poor display of defense the previous night, they new their defense needed to be on point. Pre game talk set the tempo early and gave the team a game plan on how the game would be played through out the night. Right away the starting five set the tempo. They went for every loose ball, contested every pass, and shot. Steven Rohde showed every bit of his six foot seven frame with early block shots on St Mary's promising next level super star. Not far behind was Justin Massey, who was able to properly rotate on defense to catch a shooter releasing a shot at the highest point and tossing it out of bounds. I tell you Jag fans this was a picture perfect performance and a great team effort. Directing traffic on the offensive end was our Senior Guard, Erick Mock who proved to be the glue that held the team together for the entire game. Because of the team effort, we were able to upset St. Mary's High School with an ending score of 56-50.
Go Jags
The Jags gave their best effort to come up with the win against Delores Huerta Prep, but unfortunately DHP capitalized on our 35 turnovers and 22 missed lay-ups. This game served as an eye opener for the Jags. The team now realizes that more work is needed in areas such as taking care of the ball, being more aggressive, and executing the fundamentals of basketball. Austin Cook was a key player for the Jags. He came in the game not allowing the opposing team to push him around. He met their aggressive style head on from beginning to end. Austin has proven to be the most improved player on our team. I tell you Jag Fans it was nice to see this young man push back and grab the rebound with authority. The passion in Austin's eyes at that moment was if he just conquered the world and he held it in his hands. The ending score was 86-74.
Go Jags...
Wow what a great fan base James Irwin has. From the tip of the game our fans went crazy with love and support for their James Irwin Men. I just recall telling myself or really making a mental note on how loud our fans were. It was truly a beautiful thing to have a home crowd cheering you on. Thank you James Irwin fans. You have proven to be faithful. Well with all the love and support our Jag Men had no choice but to play at the highest level that they are capable of. Leading us with points was our freshman guard, Daniel Cameron, who dropped in twenty big points. Our senior guard, Chris Bowen, had eighteen. But the story of the night was our sophomore, Steven Rohde, who had six big blocks and a ton of rebounds. Rohde was not able to get his offensive game going, but he definitely made his defensive presence.
The entire team got in on the scoring act which helped the Jag Men pull off an 81-48 win.
Go Jags...
Oh my!!!! James Irwin fans made a three hour road trip to rock Lamar Community Center. Our fans cheered just as loud as the fans of the opposing team. Our faithful fans showed up to give their boys a lift. What an awesome environment to be in!!! The Jag Men had a front row seat to a heavy weight fight. The Indians came out sparing no punches! No joke fans they threw everything at our guys but the kitchen sink. Being the discipline team we are, our guys didn't flinch. Talk about taking some shoots to the chin and continue to motor through. Never once did we get dazed by Lamar. We went into half time up 20 to 11 knowing the dirty tactics would be looming around the corner. Mentally the guys were prepared for anything. Right on Q we came out to pushing and cheap elbows in the second half. But being cool poker players that those Jag men are they remained calm through the storm, even when Lamar took a three point lead. With Justin Massey leading the way with 12 points and Steven Rohde with four steals, five blocks and nine rebounds, the Jags pulled off the victory of 47-37
Go Jags...
At Trinidad the Jaguars looked for revenge against the Miners who beat them previously in the season. The Jags came out with relentless defense but struggled to put the ball in the basket. The boys faced a 2-point deficit at halftime but came back ready to play in third quarter. The Jaguars were forced to make several adjustments to the game plan as the calls didn't go their way and many players faced foul trouble. But they played through it and in the fourth quarter made an 11-3 run. Seniors Erick Mock and Chris Bowen provided their veteran leadership and closed out the game. Steven Rhode played huge minutes and led the team with 16 points, freshman Daniel Cameron added 10 of his own. The Jags moved to 10-5 overall and 6-4 in the Tri-Peaks East.
After a great win over Trinidad Miners the night before, your Jags were looking forward to keep their win streak alive against the La Junta Tigers. In the first quarter, the Jags took it to La Junta and ended it with a 6 point lead. In the second quarter, however, the men's offense was a bit stagnant as they missed open layups and turned the ball over quite a few times. After halftime, your Jags once again picked up the intensity and built up an 11 point lead. The Jags were looking good till the fatigue set in and the Tigers climbed their way back into the game. Going into the fourth quarter, they were in a deadlock with their opponent. The Jags kept trading baskets and turnovers with the Tigers and when the final minute mark came around the game was tied at 47. The Tigers had the ball and were looking to win but in the last 5 seconds of the game Freshman guard Daniel Cameron stole the ball and took it to the basket for a last second win. Unfortunately, he didn't make the layup but he was fouled in the process with 0.4 left on the clock. The pressure was definitely on Daniel to make at least one of his free throws for the win. The first free throw rimmed out. At this point, the crowd was in a dead shock and waited for that second free throw. Daniel stepped to the line and took his time and then he made the free throw!!! Talk about dramatic huh? Well it just shows you that the Jag men like to keep it interesting for their fans. The Jags improve their overall record to 11-5 and a conference record to 7-4 as they look to make the playoffs.
The Jags men knew going into Friday night's game that they would be facing a tough physical opponent against the Rye Thunderbolts. With the loss of Justin Massey due to injury, the Jags knew they must step it up and establish a post presence to replace his loss. The Jags were not quite able to match the physical play of Rye. Going into halftime losing, they knew they must come out with relentless defense and a physical mentality they had never shown before. The Jags hung in there but could not quite get the job done down the stretch. Senior Chris Bowen led the way with 14 points, while Erick Mock and Daniel Cameron each added 12. Steven Rhode and Jacob Brenner came up big on the boards with 9 rebounds a piece.
The loss to St. Mary's was hard to accept after beating them convincingly the first match-up. Despite the guys effort we did not get our offense going and seemed to be playing chase on defense. It seemed as though none of our plays were executed to the fullest, and our 13 defense was too spread out. We were constantly chasing. However, towards the end of the game after we had switched our defense we locked them down but it was a little late. St. Mary's #32 had spread the points out of reaching distance.
This past weekend proved to be an exciting one. Our Jag Men's expectations for the March Madness Tournament were to fine tune our skills for our major upcoming summer tournaments, and they exceeded their expectations. The Jag Men began the tournament on Thursday, March 24th with two major wins against ESP and Turn it Up club teams. Friday night brought more intensity as the Jags battled from behind late in the game to defeat Pueblo 4A Bull Dogs which allowed the Jags to go into bracket play undefeated. The Jags again defeated ESP and moved on to the championship game. Hammer, Daniel, Austin, Erick, Chris, Steven, Patrick and Jacob hustled on the floor, grabbed big rebounds, and made big shots. The relentless hustle and the feeling of being so close to bring home our first championship trophy gave the Jag Men the hope that they would not be denied. The 2010 March Madness Championship trophy belongs to Your James Irwin Varsity Men Basketball Team...GO JAGS!!
